Day to Day Living at Our House of Minnesota at home…

Weekdays:
All residents attend Offsite Day Training & Habilitation Programs Monday through Friday for 5 hours a day (from about 7or 8am to between 2and 4pm).
Morning…. Weekday mornings are spent getting up between 5:30 and 7:00 am (depending on when each individual leaves) and getting ready for work.  They have breakfast, get medications, have a shower or bath if it is their time in the house schedule to do so, do morning hygienes such as brushing teeth, shaving, washing up and getting dressed.  Then its on the bus and off to work!  Residents’ buses come generally between 7:15 and 8:30 a.m., depending on their individual schedule and Day Placement.

Afternoon at home:
Residents come home off their buses between 2:00 and 4:30 in the afternoon depending on their individual schedule and Day Placement.  They’ll have an afternoon snack, have medications if needed, make their lunches to take to work for the next day (except for Friday), have their shower or bath if it is their time in the house schedule to do so, find an in home activity to do such as play a game, listen to music or read the newspaper or a magazine.  Half of the residents will go out into the community before dinner (see “Out & About)

Dinner:
Dinner is prepared by staff (residents can assist if they have time and are able in parts of dinner preparation) and served between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m.  Our menus are developed by a licensed nutritionist, meals are planned for every day of the week and on a 7 week rotation so residents are served a wide variety of nutritious balanced meals.

Evening:
The other half of the residents who did not go out before dinner will go out into the community after dinner (see “Out & About).  If the evening is spent at home, residents will choose in home activities such as playing a game, watching television (this is not usually a before dinner activity), listening to music, or reading a newspaper or magazine.  They will complete individual programs or goals that were not done during the rest of the day or have their shower or bath if this is their time in the house schedule to do so.

Bedtime:
Residents usually begin to prepare for bed beginning about 8:30 or 9:00 pm depending on preference and wake up time the next day.  At this time they will put on pajamas, get bedtime medications, and do bedtime hygiene routines such as brushing teeth, washing up, and taking down laundry to be washed, and preparing for the next day: setting clothes out, preparing for the weather etc.

All residents have Saturdays and Sundays off of Day Program and spend these days at home and doing community activities.  Holidays or other days off of Day Program are spent this way as well.

Late Afternoon:
Around 2:00 p.m. the residents who did not have an opportunity to go out into the community before lunch will go out (see “Out & About”) with one staff.  The other residents will stay home with the other staff and find activities to do at home, or participate in individual programs and goals.  Residents will have the opportunity for a light afternoon snack around 3 or 3:30 p.m. and on Sundays will participate in making their lunches to take to work for the next day.  Staffing will usually switch at 4:00 p.m. where the second staff shift of the day will come on to relieve the first shift.  Once the second shift of staff come in, half of the residents will participate in another community outing, while the other half will stay home for in house activities.  On weekends there is more time for them to participate in cleaning their rooms and other such activities that time does not permit during the week.  Residents at home will have their shower or bath if it is their time in the house schedule to do so.
